If IT support desks could talk, they’d have enough stories to fill a bestseller.
From forgotten passwords and coffee-soaked keyboards to laptops mysteriously disappearing during the morning commute, no two days in IT support are ever quite the same.
As a small IT support provider, we’ve seen our fair share of technology mishaps. In the spirit of sharing a few laughs (while protecting the innocent), here are some genuine “confessions” from the support desk.

“Have You Tried Turning It Off and On Again?”

We know.
It’s the oldest IT joke in the book.
But here’s a confession: it works far more often than most people realise.
We’ve received calls about frozen applications, missing printers, internet connectivity issues, and even a monitor that was supposedly “broken”. The solution?
A simple restart.
We don’t recommend it because we enjoy the stereotype. We recommend it because computers occasionally need a fresh start, just like the rest of us.
And yes, we still celebrate a little when a 30-second reboot instantly solves the problem.

The Forgotten Password Hall of Fame

Password resets are part of daily life in IT support.
Over the years, we’ve heard some classics:
  • “I’m sure my password is correct.”
  • “I haven’t changed it in years.”
  • “I wrote it down somewhere safe.”
  • “What do you mean I need a capital letter?”
Our personal favourite?
A user who successfully reset their password, carefully wrote down the new one… and immediately forgot where they put the note.
The good news is that we’ve become experts at password recovery.
The even better news is that password managers have dramatically reduced situations like this.

The Case of the Laptop Left on a Train

Few support calls begin with the words:
“Please don’t be angry…”
One memorable incident involved a laptop left on a train during a busy morning commute.
The panic was understandable. The device contained work files, emails, and business data.
Fortunately, the laptop was encrypted, centrally managed, and backed up properly. A replacement device was prepared, data was restored, and business continued with minimal disruption.
The lesson?
People make mistakes. Good IT planning prevents them from becoming disasters.

Coffee vs Keyboard: A Rivalry as Old as Time

There are two types of office workers:
  1. Those who have spilled a drink on a keyboard.
  2. Those who eventually will.
Coffee remains undefeated.
Over the years we’ve seen laptops survive tea, hot chocolate, fizzy drinks, and one particularly determined caramel latte.
Unfortunately, electronics and liquids have never been good friends.
If disaster strikes, switch the device off immediately and contact your IT provider before pressing random keys to “see if it still works.”
Trust us. That usually makes things worse.

What These Stories Really Tell Us

Behind every support ticket is a person trying to get their work done.
Technology can be frustrating, unpredictable, and occasionally covered in coffee. That’s why great IT support isn’t just about fixing devices. It’s about helping people stay productive, protecting business data, and keeping operations running smoothly when things don’t go to plan.
The stories may be amusing, but they highlight something important:
  • Password policies matter.
  • Backups matter.
  • Device security matters.
  • Having someone to call when things go wrong matters.
Good IT support helps businesses recover quickly from everyday mistakes and avoid expensive downtime.
